We invite the Oconomowoc community – caregivers, business owners, health care providers,
clergy members, and other interested parties to join us in making our community dementia
friendly. Learn from a team of experts about what it means to be dementia friendly, why it is
important and how you can contribute.
Hear from medical experts
Michael Malone, M.D., Geriatric Medicine, Aurora Health Care
Preparing for our future – why should communities care about dementia?
Dementia is not only a concern for the elderly. Its impact can already be felt in our communities, by our local businesses, and by our local emergency response teams. That impact is only going to grow in the coming years. Dr. Malone will discuss his belief that we are at the crossroad -between being prepared and being overwhelmed by a crisis. He’ll share how we as individuals, and as a community, can respond to the public health challenge of dementia care.
Julie Wilson, M.D., Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist, Medical Director of
ProHealth Care Neuroscience Services Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic
Dr. Wilson will address how cognitive decline in the aging adult is diagnosed in the inpatient medical rehabilitation setting, and how “dementia” is often overlooked by family and community until a medical event occurs. She will address how physical, occupational and speech therapy may help keep our patients with “dementia” functioning in a familiar environment. She will help to clarify misconceptions the public may have regarding brain injury and concussions in the elderly.
